Monterey Peninsula College Fire Technology Program / California Fire Academy at Monterey Bay

The Monterey Peninsula College Fire Technology Program and the California Fire Academy at Monterey Bay are located at the Monterey Peninsula College Public Safety Training Center on the grounds of the former Fort Ord Military Installation.  Following the closure of Fort Ord in 1994, many portions of the former military base have been converted to public and private use.  A large portion of the base is now available for recreational use including hiking, biking, and horseback riding.  Under the guidance of the Bureau of Land Management, many miles of scenic trails are available to the public.  Additionally, as of 2012, the area controlled by BLM is now designated as a National Monument. Other portions of the former base are open to private and public ventures including a State Park, two public golf courses, a regional retail shopping center, a state-of-the-art health and wellness center, a skating rink, several churches, an equestrian center,  public and private schools, a municipal airport, and residential housing. The military still maintains a presence at the former base with a VA clinic, Post Exchange, and a DOD Finance complex, along with a public safety division that includes federal police and fire agencies.

The former Fort Ord is home to an ever expanding variety of upper level educational opportunities.  The former Fort Ord is home to the California State University Monterey Bay.  As part of the California State University system, the ever expanding CSUMB offers numerous academic degree programs with a fast growing athletic program. Additionally, the Monterey College of Law calls the former Fort Ord home operating from the newly opened Community Justice Center, just down the street from the MPC Public Safety Training Center.

Along with CSUMB, Monterey Peninsula College has a strong presence at the former military base.  Opened in 2009, the Monterey Peninsula College Public Safety Training Center is home to the California Fire Academy at Monterey Bay, the Monterey Peninsula College Fire Technology Program, and the MPC basic Police Academy.  As part of the Fire Technology Program, MPC operates an accredited Firefighter 1 Basic Fire Academy. The academy is offered twice a year and is taught by instructors representing numerous fire agencies around Monterey County.  Additionally, many upper level State Fire Training classes are offered through the California Fire Academy at Monterey Bay along with the core classes of the MPC Fire Technology Degree Program.
