Fire Service Deaths 2007

 

The posting of deaths in the fire service is to educate our personnel to the hazards of the profession.  The statistics below are provided by FEMA the US Fire Administration.  The intent is to raise the awareness of all fire fighters as to those hazards.  As training officers we must review these death and  educated our personnel to the hazards of the profession in which we serve.

He was the first firefighter of a fire suppression crew through the door at a residential structure fire.  He had gone approximately four feet into the structure when he fell through the floor into a well-involved basement. He was rescued by several fellow firefighters and transported to the hospital where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries on 01/05/2007.

Firefighter Reed passed away following a medical emergency (heart attack) while performing physical fitness training.

He was operating a 3/4-ton U. S. Forest Service truck and returning from a controlled burn, when (according to Highway Patrol investigators) the truck apparently crossed over into oncoming traffic striking a semi-tractor and trailer head-on.
Both vehicles caught fire upon impact.  He and the operator of the other vehicle, 43 year-old were pronounced dead on the scene. Investigation into the cause of the accident continues.

He along with other firefighters arrived on-scene at a fully involved residential structure fire. Firefighters initiated interior search and rescue, and while in progress; the floor collapsed trapping  him when he fell into the basement. Fire conditions prevented all attempts to rescue him and he perished. Three other firefighters were injured while attempting the rescue with their reported injuries to be minor. The family of the residence was able to escape the fire unharmed.

He responded in his POV to a reported odor of gas at a commercial structure. Upon arrival on the scene, approximately twelve minutes after the initial dispatch, the accumulated propane in the area was ignited by a yet to be determined source causing a massive explosion, and destroyed the structure and apparatus/vehicles. The resulting blast fatally wounded two fire personnel and two civilians, as well as critically injuring four civilians and one firefighter.

He responded to a reported odor of gas at a commercial structure. Upon arrival on the scene, approximately twelve minutes after the initial dispatch, the accumulated propane in the area was ignited by a yet to be determined source causing a massive explosion, and destroyed the structure and apparatus/vehicles.  The resulting blast fatally wounded two fire personnel and two civilians, as well as critically injuring four civilians and one firefighter.

Fire fighter passed away from injuries received at a working residential structure fire when a portion of the structure, reported to be a canopy, collapsed on him and another firefighter.

On the afternoon of 2/01/2007, he worked a dwelling fire. That evening he attended drill night where he complained of not feeling well to others. At approximately 0130 hours on 2/03/2007, he was transported to the hospital with flu like systems. While being transferred for an angioplasty he went into cardiac arrest and passed away.

While responding to an EMS call, he began to experience the affects of a stroke. He had difficulty breathing and was unable to exit his vehicle. He notified dispatch, and medical assistance responded and transported him to the hospital. After being transferred to another hospital, he underwent surgery; however, he did not recover and passed away February 2, 2007.

He suffered a heart attack while operating the fire department ambulance and responding on an EMS call.  He managed to pull the ambulance safely to the side of the road.
Another responder riding with him provided CPR and he was transported to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at 0109 hours.

He passed away from injuries received when the fire apparatus he was operating (in response to a fire call at a vacant residential structure) was struck in an intersection (Grid: 17TLG27529231) by an SUV traveling at a very high rate of speed. Reports indicate that he and another firefighter were ejected from the apparatus. The driver of the SUV was killed in the collision, which occurred less than five miles from downtown Detroit in a densely populated residential/mixed-use area of the city.

He was involved in a motor vehicle accident while returning home from department mandated EMT-training in a neighboring county. King's personally owned vehicle (POV) reportedly crossed over the center line and struck a semi-tractor and trailer.

She passed away from injuries sustained during a live fire training exercise in a vacant row house. Reports indicate that she was inside of the three-story dwelling when she collapsed. She was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and passed away shortly after she arrived.

He responded to the station at approximately 1600hrs for an emergency medical call.  He  stayed at the station and was on standby, manning the radios and also shoveling snow.
Shortly thereafter, he returned to his residence and at approximately 2100hrs experienced a heart attack. The fire department responded to his residence, he was treated and transported to the hospital, but passed away.

He had responded with his rescue squad to a working multi-unit residential fire when while searching the sixth floor for victims,  he collapsed. Fellow firefighters immediately began CPR and called for paramedics to respond to the apartment.  He was transported to Albany Medical Center but in spite of all efforts to resuscitate him, he passed away from his injuries.

Upon arrival, SSH Firefighters entered the building and conducted an investigation. Firefighters determined this to be a false alarm due to a faulty detector. Firefighters secured the alarm and notified the owner.  Firefighters cleared the scene and arrived back at the station at 1127 hours.  One of the firefighters who responded to this alarm and later passed away from an apparent heart attack at approximately 2315 hours the same day.

He passed away from injuries received in a motor vehicle accident while he was responding to another motor vehicle accident call.  He reportedly was ejected from his privately owned vehicle when he failed to yield right of way at an intersection and was struck by another vehicle.

He was awakened by the central alarm system in his station when another station had been dispatched for extrication operations at the scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision. He woke up not feeling well and had cold sweats. He contacted central dispatch to summon EMS to his station. EMS began patient care and was loading him in the ambulance for transport to the hospital when he went into cardiac arrest. He was resuscitated and transported to the hospital. He went into cardiac arrest a second time while in route to the hospital and care continued during the remainder of the transport and at the hospital until he was pronounced.

He died from injuries sustained while responding to an alarm when the apparatus he was in was struck by a school bus at the intersection of 59th Street and Princeton Avenue (Grid:16TDM474263) on the Southside of Chicago. Further details are pending investigation. Three other firefighters were injured in the accident as was the driver of the school bus. There were no children on board the school bus at the time.

He died from injuries when while en route to a structure fire (abandoned mobile home), the 1987 Chevrolet tanker with 1,200 gallons of water he was operating left the roadway and rolled.

He was called out for a mutual aid response to a grass fire. Upon entering Rome Fire Station for standby, he greeted the other personnel and then collapsed without warning.

A Police Captain and two other fire police officers were responding to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 787 when their fire department vehicle, operated by Scott, was involved in a collision with a propane truck.  The Police Captain passed away from injuries at the scene and the other two fire police officers were injured.

He answered the alarm call for a motor vehicle accident and was responding to the station in his privately owned vehicle when he was involved in a two-car motor vehicle collision. The accident occurred on U.S. Route 60, just west of the Mose A. Napier Bridge in Ceredo (grid: 17SLC 653 509).   He was ejected from his vehicle and passed away from injuries at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle involved was treated and transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

He arrived on scene of a working residential (inhabited) structure fire in Woodbridge (15000 block, Marsh Overlook Drive; grid 18SUH0376).   Initial reports indicate that he and his rescue-ladder truck officer were performing search and rescue of the dwelling on the second floor.  He became disoriented and separated from the officer, activating his Mayday distress alarm and signaling Mayday over the radio.
The severity of the fire quickly worsened, weather conditions were extremely windy. With rapid fire progress and a partial collapse of the structure, other firefighters were unable to rescue him he passed away on scene from injuries.

He passed away from injuries sustained in a single vehicle traffic accident when his vehicle, for a reason still to be determined, left State Route 44 in Lassen County (near Bogard Rest Area, grid: 10TFK58089856).

He collapsed during a fitness training exercise. ALS was on-scene for the training exercise so CPR was initiated almost immediately.  He was transported to the hospital where he later passed away.

He had traveled to Houston, TX, to attend a high-rise fire training session. He fell ill early in the morning after his arrival and was transported to the hospital where he passed away from a heart attack.

He responded to a reported barn fire. Upon arrival on scene, it was determined that the fire was actually a controlled burn of brush and other agricultural products that had not been reported to the Sheriff's Office. The owner was advised of the burn laws and allowed to continue the burn. While returning to the station, he experienced a medical emergency and pulled off to the side of the road. The apparatus following him pulled off to the side of the road to assist him and request EMS. Care was initiated and he was transported to the local hospital and then flown to a larger hospital where he later passed away for cause still to be determined by the Franklin County Coroner.

Immediately after participating in a wildland Pack Test, he returned home and complained of not feeling well. He was transported to a hospital where he passed away from a heart attack.

He was the driver of a second engine on an alarm which was returned to available status. After backing the engine into the station, he suffered an apparent heart attack. CPR was initiated by other firefighters and he was transported to the Corry Memorial Hospital where he could not be revived.

While responding to a call, he was driving a tanker truck that overturned after rounding a roadway curve. The vehicle came to rest on its passenger side and he passed away at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.

He collapsed on the scene of a tool-shed fire.  Although he was treated at the scene and transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital, he could not be revived.

While responding to a residential structure fire, he  lost control of his personal vehicle near the entrance to the Sienna Ranch housing community (USNG: 14SPG645632), causing it to roll several times.  He was reported to have been ejected from the vehicle.  He was transported in extremely critical condition to Kansas Medical Center in Andover, KS by Butler County EMS, but sustained injuries that proved to be fatal and passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

He passed away from an apparent heart attack within 24 hours of responding to and working a residential structure fire.

He fell ill while working at the station preparing vehicles to be used for vehicle extrication training.  He complained to fellow firefighters of not feeling well then suffered an apparent heart attack. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Firefighter-EMT Jeans had participated in a large diameter hose training the evening before his passing away. He spent the night at the station, and then worked a number of other fire department duties in the morning and early afternoon leading up to his passing.

He had responded to several incidents of downed power lines and trees due to storms throughout the afternoon of 5/16/2007. He had then returned home and assisted a neighbor with cleanup. The department had been dispatched to another call and he was preparing to respond when he began to experience chest pains. He contacted 911 and the fire department was dispatched to his residence. Upon their arrival, he was found unresponsive. Care was initiated and he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Engine 8 were responding to a reported kitchen fire when they were struck at an intersection by Truck 1. The driver of the engine were both ejected upon impact and suffered massive head trauma.   He was transported to the local hospital and then transferred to Yale-New Haven hospital where he remained hospitalized until the time of his passing. A total of 8 firefighters were injured in the event and all transported to various area hospitals. At the time of  his passing, all firefighters except for the driver had been released from the hospital.

He was operating a fire department tanker en route to a structure fire when while making a sharp left turn on County Road 32 the apparatus left the roadway and overturned.

He was on the scene of an MVA involving an overturned semi with report of entrapment. Extrication was made and firefighters were on standby awaiting a wrecker. After nearly 4 hours on the scene he  began complaining of being hot. His gear was removed and he was given water.  He was evaluated by fire and EMS personnel but declined further treatment and after a short period rejoined the other firefighters. Several hours after clearing the scene of the incident,  he collapsed and later passed away from cardiac arrest.

He passed away at North Fulton Regional Hospital from injuries received at a residential structure fire.  He and other firefighters were searching for a trapped occupant in the structure when they were overcome by rapid fire progress.

He had responded to and worked several incidents through the end of his shift on 05/28/2007, during which he complained to others he was not feeling well. Upon completion of his shift he went home and was discovered a number of hours later having passed away from an apparent heart attack, though a precise cause is pending autopsy.

He responded with his crew to several incidents the morning of June 4, 2007. As he and other firefighters prepared for lunch,  he collapsed. He was treated by his crew and other firefighters and transported to the hospital. He was not revived.

He collapsed from a cause still to be determined while involved in SCBA and hose drills. Aid was rendered immediately by fellow firefighters and continued while he was being transported to Monroe Clinic, where he was pronounced deceased.

Nine Charleston Fire Department firefighters passed away while operating in the interior of a Sofa Super Store attempting to rescue two employees. Initial reports indicate that rapid fire progress caused the roof of the structure to collapse along with large shelves that held heavy furniture, trapping the firefighters

He was fatally injured this afternoon while battling an all-hands fire at 83 Meserole St. in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.  Preliminary reports indicate he was operating on the roof of a four-story apartment building when he fell to the ground and sustained critical injuries. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

He was operating the pump on an apparatus at the scene of a residential fire (Grid: 16TGN13915467) when he suffered a major heart attack.  He passed away while being transported to the hospital.

He suffered a heart attack shortly after completing his tour of duty during which he had made multiple runs.  He departed the station late that morning, approximately 0730hrs, following a motor vehicle accident response. He passed away at approximately 0930hrs.

He had responded to a brush fire during the evening hours of 07/04/07. Once the call concluded, he returned to the station. Shortly after midnight on 07/05/07, he was in the bunk area of the station when he developed a medical emergency. He was transported to the hospital where despite all efforts, he passed away at approximately 0113 hours. A cause of death is still pending.

He responded to a mutual aid call for a fully involved residential structure fire, he was reported to have performed search and rescue duties, as well as helping ventilate the structure. After the fire was brought under control, firefighters returned to the firehouse to clean and put equipment away.

Within several hours of leaving the firehouse for home (approximately 1200hrs), he reported to be fit with no known medical problems, complained to his wife of having back pain and feeling faint.
He then collapsed and passed away from an apparent heart attack.

He had worked several fires during his shift and complained of not feeling well, indigestion types of symptoms.  After several days of continuing to feel ill, one at home with flu like symptoms, he was admitted to the hospital when his wife, a paramedic, checked him with an EKG and believed he was having a heart attack.

At 0143, Engine 70 was dispatched to a fire alarm. While en route, based on additional information, the incident was upgraded to a structure response.  The on-scene report indicated that two people were inside.  Four engines, including three from Contra Costa County Fire District and one from Richmond Fire Department responded.  Engine 70's crew, after finding and assisting in one rescue, continued searching for a second victim. During this rescue effort they became trapped. Despite valiant rescue efforts, two firefighters, were overcome by rapid fire progress.
The occupants of the residence also perished as a result of the fire.

He passed away from a head injury he suffered after he slipped and fell, hitting his head on the concrete floor of the station, while he was laying a hose used to fight a house fire earlier in the evening back in place on top of fire apparatus.

A helicopter went down in remote and heavily wooded country approximately 12 miles SSE of Happy Camp, in the Klamath National Forest, while transporting a load of fresh drinking water to firefighters working on the ground fighting the Elk Complex of fires. The cause of the accident is under investigation. The Pilot was a wildland contract pilot from Idaho Helicopters Incorporated, Boise, ID

He complained of back pain after setting up two ladders at a working residential structure fire.  He was transported to the hospital from the fireground at 0530hrs. He was released the same day at 1400hrs, but after the back pain continued,  he was taken back to another hospital at 1730hrs where he passed away two days later from a cause still to be determined.

He was struck by a Greyhound bus on Interstate 57 while putting hose back into a piece of apparatus after extinguishing a fire in a semi-trailer truck.

He passed away from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident while returning home from pumper training in the Western part of North Carolina. A westbound semi-tractor trailer that had been struck by vehicles in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 was forced over the center guardrails/median and into eastbound traffic, including his vehicle. Several drivers and occupants of other vehicles involved were transported to hospitals with severe injuries.

After having worked an afternoon/evening fire call on 8/06/2007,  he arrived at the fire department the morning of 08/07/0227 to work his scheduled 24hr shift. He spent the morning cleaning up equipment from the fire call that occurred the previous day and responding to at least one EMS incident. Later during his shift, he went to bed at the station where he was discovered the following morning passed away from a cause still to be determined.  He reportedly had no known prior medical conditions.

He lost his footing and fell from an Interstate (I-30) bridge over the Saline River while working to extract a victim from a single vehicle motor vehicle accident.  He passed away from injuries.

He was en route to an elementary school (false) fire alarm call as the operator and solo occupant of a fire department pumper. According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, he lost control of the apparatus while entering a turn, leaving the right side of roadway, correcting back to the center, correcting again to the right, then leaving the roadway and striking an embankment. The apparatus then rolled and slid into a tree, the final resting position.
The tree tore the roof off of the cab of the apparatus. He  was wearing safety seat restraints at the time of the incident but passed away from his injuries. The Fire Marshal's Office indicated the incident remains under investigation.

He collapsed at the scene of a multi-family residential unit fire.  He was treated on scene then transported to the hospital but passed away from a cause still to be determined.

They were fatally injured while battling a seven-alarm high-rise fire at the former Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty Street in lower Manhattan.
The two firefighters became trapped in maze-like conditions on the 14th floor of the building, which is undergoing demolition. They suffered severe smoke inhalation and were taken to NY Downtown Hospital in cardiac arrest where they succumbed to their injuries.

He had spent several hours working to rescue a victim who had fallen down a ravine and broke a leg. After placing the individual into the ambulance and reportedly shortly after midnight, he and others returned to the bottom of the ravine to retrieve ropes and other equipment where he was not feeling well, indicated that he needed a drink of water. Before a drink could be provided, he had passed away from an apparent heart attack.

He was participating in firefighter level one training when he experienced chest pains.  He suffered an apparent heart attack while be transported by ambulance to the hospital where he was placed on life support, but passed away early in the morning of 08/17/2007.

He was responding to a cardiac distress call when he lost control of his private vehicle. The vehicle left the roadway, but he corrected it back on to the road, striking another vehicle. His vehicle then traveled off of the roadway again, where it rolled and burst into flames at its final resting position. He passed away from carbon monoxide inhalation and thermal injuries. He was wearing his seat belt. Both occupants in the second vehicle involved in the incident were transported to the hospital, but were listed in good condition the following day.

Both passed away from injuries received while inside of a working structure fire.  They along with other firefighters, were working a hose line inside of a restaurant. Heavy smoke conditions caused the firefighters to become disoriented. A large air conditioning unit then fell through the roof of the restaurant initiating rapid fire progress.  Multiple firefighters were trapped and injured. After being rescued, reports indicate that eight firefighters were treated and released from the hospital; two firefighters remain hospitalized being treated for smoke inhalation.

He was seriously injured when he fell and struck his head while loading an antique pumper onto a trailer to be taken to a parade. He was transported to a local hospital, a level two trauma center, with massive head trauma. He  passed away from his injuries the following afternoon.

He was responding to a mutual-aid call for a residential fire when he lost control of his privately owned vehicle while traveling west on County Road 189 near Township Road 601 (USNG: 17TME265963). After leaving the roadway, he struck both a utility pole and tree, coming to a final resting position upside down.  he  was reported to have not been wearing a safety belt, passed away from injuries after being ejected from his vehicle. Safe traveling speed per road conditions (wet) may have been a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

He responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident in his privately owned vehicle with other members of his department. When the department cleared the scene, he and one other firefighter exchanged vehicles to return to the station. While returning, he lost control of the motorcycle he was operating, which left the roadway and struck a tree. He was transported to the hospital but passed away from injuries received.

He was notified by someone knocking at the door of his residence that there was a fire in a nearby structure, a bar formerly owned by Bailey's father called "Engine No 2" located at 221 Water St. (USNG: 17TNE94665880).  According to investigating officials, he collapsed from an apparent heart attack after confirming that there was a working fire in the structure. He was transported to Jefferson Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators indicated that the structure was abandoned with no utilities and had a history of recent break-ins. They believe the fire was intentionally set.

He had worked a number of calls during the day including downed power lines, medical emergencies, false alarms, and a basement fire in a vacant residential structure. In the evening after the last of the calls, he  complained to other firefighters about not feeling well. A short time later he was found unconscious on the floor of the station. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate him; he was transported to Saints Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from a cause still to be determined.

He responded to a reported fire at the Shickshinny High Rise. Upon arrival, he  fell ill complaining to other firefighters that he was suffering from chest pains and had difficulty breathing. He was transported to the Berwick Hospital Center where he passed away from an apparent heart attack.

While operating his privately owned vehicle and en route to the station in response to reported power lines down,  he struck a large tree that had fallen into the roadway. Strong storms were passing through the area with reported heavy rainfall at the time of the accident. Although he was wearing his seatbelt,  he passed away at the scene from his injuries.

A tractor trailer rig took a wrong turn and had to turn around because a bridge was closed for construction. When turning around, the rig struck a utility pole causing a live wire to fall and spark a grass fire near houses. While battling the wind-whipped grass fire, he came in contact with the live wire and was severely shocked. He  was taken by air ambulance in critical condition to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St Francis Campus where he passed away within an hour.

He passed away from injuries received while working at a residential structure fire. The fire, in a detached garage, was largely extinguished and firefighters were working to put out hot spots when the garage doors and a support beam collapsed on three of them. Firefighters and law enforcement personnel at the scene worked to free the three trapped firefighters, and afterwards, they were transported to the hospital.
Two of the three injured firefighters were treated for burns and released from the hospital. Two police officers also suffered minor injuries.  He suffered severe injuries, his condition worsened over the following days, and on 09/29/2007 he passed away. The fire began when the homeowner was fixing a motorcycle and fuel spilled onto a burning citronella candle.

While responding to the station for an outdoor fire call, his privately owned vehicle crossed over the centerline while negotiating a curve and struck an oncoming vehicle.  He was transported to the Gettysburg Hospital, but did not survive the accident.  He was reported by authorities to have not been wearing a seat belt. The operator of the second vehicle was not injured.

a heavy fire equipment operator assigned to the Hollister Air Attack Base in the San Benito Monterey Unit, was working the Colorado Fire in Monterey County when his bull dozer overturned. He was airlifted to the San Jose Regional Medical Center where he passed away from injuries sustained in the rollover.
