Fire Service Deaths 2005

 

The posting of deaths in the fire service is to educate our personnel to the hazards of the profession.  The statistics below are provided by FEMA the US Fire Administration.  The intent is to raise the awareness of all fire fighters as to those hazards.  As training officers we must review these death and  educated our personnel to the hazards of the profession in which we serve.

While responding to an alarm (residential smoke investigation) in his personally owned vehicle,  he lost control of the vehicle and crashed off of the roadway flipping several times and ejecting him. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt. He was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Was responding to a shift recall of his oncoming shift to cover the station due to extreme weather conditions and the on-duty crew investigating an odor of smoke in a structure. While en route to the station, his POV rolled over and collided with a concrete sign pole on Interstate 95. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was fighting a residential structure fire when his self contained breathing apparatus began to run out of air.  He became disoriented and then became entrapped, causing him to issue a Mayday call. He was found on the second floor of the structure and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While battling a second alarm fire in East New York, Brooklyn members of Ladder 103 entered the basement of the building, where the fire originated. During the search operations, Firefighter became separated from his colleagues. He was found minutes later unconscious and in respiratory arrest on the cellar staircase. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital where he died a short time later.

Died from cause still to be determined while fighting a forest fire. He was on a one-inch line and had returned to his brush-truck to reposition the apparatus when he collapsed.

Responded to a structure fire on the evening of 01/02/2005. He returned home after the incident and reported to work the next day. When he failed to return home on the evening of 01/03/2005, his parents began to search for him. He was found deceased at the job site where he had been working that day from a heart attack.

Responded to the station for a call of smoke within a structure. He was discovered lying on the ground inside the station by a passer-by who notified police. Cause of death, cardiac arrest.

He was working a hand line at a residential structure fire when he became ill (possible heart attack, autopsy pending).  He returned to the apparatus outside where he told the pump operator that he required medical attention. He was provided immediate assistance by on scene medics, but those efforts were unable to revive him.

Responded to odor of natural gas in a single family dwelling and was in the process of evacuating occupants from the building when he collapsed outside of the building. Despite efforts of fire and EMS personnel to revive him, he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead of a suspected heart attack.

Was working outside of a residential structure fire when he apparently was struck by a fallen power line that was dangling across the driveway from a tree limb.  He was treated at the scene and pronounced dead a short time later at an area hospital.

While on assignment in Iraq as a firefighter,  he drowned while attempting with another firefighter and a medic to save two soldiers trapped in a Humvee that had overturned in a canal.

He was performing search and rescue efforts at a residential structure fire when the structure became unstable. All other personnel pulled out except for him, he who became trapped when the roof collapsed. Despite rescue efforts by fellow firefighters, attempts to save him were unsuccessful. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

He responded to a vehicle fire late at night on 02/17/2005.  Following the incident he returned home early in the morning of 02/18/2005.  When he failed to show up at work later in the day, the department sent someone to his house to check on him and found the residence secured.  Entry was made into the structure with assistance of his fiancé where he was found deceased in his bed (cardiac related).

He was operating at the scene of a barn fire when he collapsed from an apparent heart attack. Care was initiated and he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He had responded to two wildfires on 02/21/2005, and had complained of some pain and a burning sensation in his chest prior to going off duty. He went home where he collapsed from an apparent heart attack. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While responding to an automatic residential fire alarm call, had reached his privately owned vehicle (POV) and was about to enter it when he suffered a massive heart attack. He collapsed onto the sidewalk next to the vehicle and died.

Was driving to a meeting at his department when his department vehicle was struck by an on-coming vehicle fleeing from police and traveling at a high rate of speed.  He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was working at the scene of a residential structure fire. When he returned to his vehicle to gather additional equipment he collapsed from an apparent heart attack. Care was initiated at the scene and He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While conducted and participated in training activities over the period of several days and during that time had complained of a constant discomfort he described as a "gas bubble" just above his stomach and under his heart/sternum. At approximately 2345 hrs on 02/23/2005, he awoke and sat upright in bed telling his wife, a fellow firefighter/EMT, that the pain had become much worse spreading between his shoulder blades. He declined having an ambulance called but consented to be driven to the hospital. While preparing to depart the residence, he collapsed and quit breathing. His wife called 911 and initiated CPR. Other firefighters arrived with an AED and shocked him several times with no improvement. Paramedics arrived about 10 minutes later (from an adjacent
town) and began advanced life support with no results. Further attempts to revive him at the hospital also met with negative results and he was pronounced dead early in the morning of 03/24/2005.

Died as a result of a helicopter crash while working a prescribed burn, dropping fire pellets to start fires in the forest below, near Shelbyville, Texas. The cause of the helicopter crash is still to be determined.

He and another firefighter had completed set-up and run through testing of a search and rescue course involving hose evolutions in a building under renovation when he collapsed. EMS was summoned and care was initiated. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Collapsed of a brain aneurysm while participating in a live-burn exercise; preparing to enter the burning building. He was treated on the scene and then transported to the hospital where he died two days later from the injury.

He responded to multiple calls during an overtime shift. Two hours after completing the overtime shift, he suffered a dissecting aortic aneurysm. He was transported to the local hospital where the aneurysm was diagnosed. He then was airlifted to a Dallas hospital where he died during emergency surgery to repair the aneurysm.

He was participating in a Firefighter I training class on 04/02/2005.  At approximately 1330 hrs., he fell approximately 20 feet from a 24 foot ground ladder.  He was transported to the hospital where he died on the following day.

He responded to a single motor-vehicle accident (MVA) with a rollover.  Upon arrival at the scene and as he exited his personally-owned vehicle (POV), He collapsed from a cause still to be determined.  Care was initiated at the scene, but despite all efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Discovered and reported a fire at his own residence, responded to the station, and drove a pumper back to the residence. While operating the pumper, he collapsed from an apparent heart attack.  He was transported to the hospital where he died later in the day.

He was operating a rescue truck returning to the station from a canceled emergency call, an auto accident, when for unknown reasons his apparatus left the roadway, striking several trees.  He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While returning from a fire alarm system call (false alarm),  He suddenly collapsed while driving the pumper. Immediate life support efforts were begun with subsequent transport to the hospital. Further efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

He was operating apparatus at the scene of a motor vehicle accident at approximately 0851 hrs when his apparatus gradually drifted off the side of the roadway into the guardrail.
The crew that was following him stopped and discovered him in cardiac arrest. Despite all efforts to revive Fast, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 0938 hrs.

He suffered a hemorrhagic stroke (cerebral bleed) while operating Metuchen Engine 4 in a funeral procession paying last respects to a former retired Fire Chief and one of his best friends.

He was attempting to rescue a fallen victim from a liquid manure pit when he was overcome by toxic fumes (hydrogen sulfide).

He was working a 8:00 pm -8:00 am shift on 05/06 - 07/2005. At 10:00 pm he responded to an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) call. At 8:00 am on 05/07/2005, he remained at the station working an overtime shift to cover for incoming shift members that were attending training. A short time into his shift, he complained of not feeling well and went to lie down in the bunk room. He was discovered later as having died in his sleep.

Returned from a training exercise feeling poorly and was transported to an area hospital where he died; suspected of suffering a cardiac incident.

Suffered from a significant blood borne exposure during the course of providing emergency medical care to a cardiac care patient. When the patient suffered a seizure, he was stuck by a needle and as a result he contracted Hepatitis C. After a 10 year battle with this debilitating disease, he passed away on May 22, 2005.

After performing ladder drills and public education programs demonstrating firefighting techniques on the morning of May 31, 2005,  he went to perform his afternoon physical fitness training. During his workout he suffered a heart attack in the fire station and was given assistance by his fellow firefighters. He was taken to the Atlantic City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1459 hrs.

His 12 person crew were engaged in a conservation project, while in a status as the "Initial Attack" of the wildland fire crew. Three large wildfires were burning in Nevada with thunderstorms and lightening being forecasted. He became involved in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) roll over which resulted in his death. An ongoing investigation is being conducted.

He was performing fire suppression at the scene of a residential structure fire at approximately 2200 hours. He exited the structure when overhaul began, and experienced chest pains and shortness of breath. He doffed his Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and sat down on a curb when he collapsed suddenly. CPR was initiated immediately and he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2357 hours.

Approximately 1445 hours on June 9, 2005,  he had worked a mutual aid call on a grass fire that burned 260 acres of wheat. That night, he called in an alarm to the fire department reporting that there had possibly been a lightning strike on a power poll near his residence; causing both a power outage and another ground fire. A short time later, he again called the fire department to ascertain the status of the response units and then he went outside to begin work on putting out the fire. While doing so, he came into contact with a live wire that had caused the fire and electrocuted him to death.

He died at home within 24 hours after being released from duty and having responded to several incidents.

He responded on multiple calls due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy with the last being after midnight on July 7, 2005. He was returning to the station around 0140 hours on July 7, 2005, when he suffered a heart attack behind the wheel of the apparatus. The other firefighters in the apparatus rendered aid, but despite all efforts, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Operated a piece of apparatus to a residential smoke detector activation. After arriving on the scene, he suffered an apparent heart attack. Care was initiated on the scene and he was transported to the hospital where he died.

Operating at a tree fire that was struck by lightning, a large branch fell and struck him in the head. Medical aid was rendered on the scene, and he was transported to the hospital where he died a short time later.

He was bailing hay on his property when the hay bailer started to burn and spread to dried hay. He called his home and told his family to call the fire department. When the fire department arrived, he had already extinguished the fire. The fire department investigated and afterwards, while conversing with members of the department he collapsed. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was struck by a vehicle while working traffic control at a hazmat incident.  He was rendered aid at the scene and transported to the hospital, but died from injuries sustained early in the morning of August 18, 2005.

He responded to a grass fire, while engaged in fire suppression operations, at approximately 3:00 p.m., he collapsed at the scene from a cause still to be determined. Care was initiated and he was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

He received an alarm call for an EMS incident and was in the process of preparing to leave his residence when he began to feel dizzy and light-headed. His wife notified the emergency department and they responded providing basic life support (BLS).  He was transported to Tri-County Memorial Hospital, and while en-route,  he went into code. Any further attempt to revive him while in transport, or at the hospital met with negative results. The emergency room doctor said the cause of death was probably a major heart attack, and is pending further investigation.

He died while engaged in firefighting activities immediately following a residential structure fire. The cause of death is pending results of an autopsy, however, it was reported that he collapsed at the scene and went into cardiac arrest. Riverside Fire Department paramedics performed advanced life support (ALS) on him before American Medical Response (AMR) transported him to Kaiser Hospital in Riverside where he was pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m.

He was controlling traffic at the scene of a structure fire when he collapsed. Care was initiated immediately and he was transported to the hospital. Despite all resuscitative efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

He operated a tanker to the scene of a working structure fire at approximately 2345 hours. He exited the vehicle to supply water when the truck jumped into gear while pumping and rolled forward, pinning him beneath the apparatus. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

 He was responding to a medical call when the apparatus he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer truck.  He was extricated from the vehicle and flown to University of Alabama-Birmingham Trauma Center where he died shortly after of injuries sustained from the accident.

Participated in live fire training the previous work shift 11/21/2005, he suffered a heart attack the next day, 11/22/2005, and passed away on 11/25/2005.

He died from injuries he received when the fire apparatus he was riding in was involved in a vehicle accident in responding to a reported gas leak.

He was driving 1,200 gallon water tender as his department was responding to a structure fire. At about 1330 hours, he lost control of the vehicle on Ranch-to-Market Road 963, causing the truck to leave the roadway, striking a fence and trees.  He remained in the fire truck, which burned from a post-crash fire, and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt and there were no passengers. The Texas Department of Public Safety and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the incident.

Three firefighters were returning from a parade stand-by duty on a fire department watercraft. The watercraft collided with another vessel an one firefighter drowned.

He was returning home from teaching a Level One Firefighter Class in Huttonsville, WV when his truck was struck by a semi-truck, which had veered into his lane. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was also a volunteer Captain at the Belington Fire Department, WV.
